Bateria Workshops

Come and join our bateria workshops and learn samba drumming and percussion. All ages and abilities are welcome, so no experience is necessary, and there are beginners courses as well as rehearsals for beginners and regular/intermediate players. There's no need to book in advance, just come along to a taster session to try it out, or register for one of our beginner courses. You can also join as a member and play on parade with the School.

All sticks and instruments are provided at our workshops, but if you have your own instrument you are welcome to bring it along.

Please check the Workshop Details on the right for full dates, costs and times of our workshops.

Bateria Directors

Brighton School of Samba's bateria sessions are led by our Bateria Directors Malcolm Duffitt, Russell Fielding and Craig Radmall, and the School regularly host workshops with guest instructors.

Malcolm Duffitt - Bateria Director, Brighton School of Samba Malcolm Duffitt - Bateria Director, co-founder of BSS
Formerly a drummer, Malcolm discovered samba in early 2006. He has played regularly with several baterias ever since, and paraded with London School of Samba at Notting Hill Carnival in 2007 & 2008. Malcolm brings his energy and experience to directing the Brighton School of Samba bateria on parade.

Craig Radmall - Assistant Mestre, Brighton School of Samba Craig Radmall - Bateria Director
Craig joined the Brighton School of Samba in 2008 and after just one rehearsal was hooked. As an experienced kit drummer, he started his samba career on the caixa and surdo 3 before turning his attention to learning other instruments in the bateria. Craig is the Bateria Director for beginner sessions within the school and leads the 'kitchen' section of the bateria on parade.

Russell Fielding - Bateria Director & Lead Repenique, Brighton School of Samba Russell Fielding - Bateria Director
Russell also joined the Brighton School of Samba in 2008, and after playing a range of instruments in the bateria, showed an outstanding aptitude for the repenique. Russell is the Bateria Director for the Intermediate sessions within the school and is the Lead Repenique player. Russell heads up the bateria on parade.
