Join Brighton School of Samba on Parade in 2015

Traditionally, the School conceives a theme for the Carnival parade and develops its 'enredo' (carnival song), designs and makes costumes for all the parading sections of the School including the Bateria, Ala Passista, Ala Baiana etc., so there are plenty of ways you can be involved with the Brighton School of Samba in the 2015 season.

The next performance for the School is the Brighton Pride parade on Saturday 1st August. This is the biggest outing for BSS with around 100 performers taking part under the BSS flag.

A collection of designs is carefully selected and the prototypes get underway. With as many as 80-100 performers requiring a costume, there are plenty of opportunities to help with making them, so if you have some free time, check our Calendar page for details of when the costume sessions are running and join us!

The Brighton School of Samba can be seen in its full glory at various events this coming year, and there are plenty of ways you can be involved with any of our events, including:

  • Parading as a member of the Bateria by attending our drum workshops
  • Parading as one of our dancers by attending our dance workshops
  • Helping the School to make costumes for the parade
  • Helping steward the School on parade

If you are interested in participating with Brighton School of Samba as a performer or in any other capacity in 2015, please email We are particularly keen to hear from anyone wishing to design and/or make costumes, from baiana dresses to head dresses, wrist cuffs and costumes for the bateria. Everyone is invited and welcome to join in.

Alternatively, take a look at the other ways you can get involved with the School's activities.

History of BSS parades

Brighton Carnival burst back onto the city streets in Summer 2007 as a huge, colourful parade including hundreds of local and international performers weaved its way through the Lanes and onto Brighton seafront, culminating at Hove Lawns with a finale stage performance from Brasil's very own Monobloco.

In 2008, Brighton School of Samba were crowned 'Best Large Band' winners in their first Brighton Carnival parade, and retained the title at Brighton Carnival 2009.

In 2010, BSS were awarded the Gold Award at Worthing Carnival

2011 saw BSS make our debut at Brighton Pride in front of an audience of over 100,000 people. In addition to our 'regular' performances. The Pride theme for 2011 was 'Out in this world', so we dressed as stars & planets and camp space crew. We also debuted a new school 'member', affectionately named 'SAM', the Samba Alien Monster.

In 2012 the theme for 2012 was 'United Colours of Pride', which saw us dressed as a giant rainbow flag, with red, orange and yellow fairy wings in the dance section, to green, bue and violet capes and hats for the bateria.

2013's theme 'Gay Icons', lent itself to the Brazilian icon Carmen Miranda. Using the colours of the Brazilian flag, the whole school wore ruffles, fruit and feathers.

2014 theme 'the World is a Disco'.

For 2015 the theme is 'Carnival of Diversity'. Clocks 2007Carnival 2008Carnival 2008Pride 2011Brazil 2012
